One of the major headlines in fashion this year focused on the diversity of models. More specifically the lack thereof, particularly with too few black models and too many blond European models (Vogue Italia used only black models in their July issue, never mind that the models in ads were predominantly white).
And amidst the debate quietly exists a stable of Asian models, who get a steady amount of ad, editorial and runway work without inciting much of a stir (ain’t that always the case?). There aren’t many, but they do fairly well in comparison to black models. The explanation being that they help brands cater to a growing Asian luxury market (hello China) and that there’s also many emerging Asian designers (Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, Doo.Ri Chung, Jason Wu, Richard Chai, etc.).
