it’s a madcap world

Vogue February 2009
Viktoriya Sasonkina, Jourdan Dunn, Anna Jagodzinska, Karlie Kloss, Natasha Poly & Liya Kebede/Photographer: Steven Meisel

Shot by Steven Meisel, “It’s a Madcap World” teems with cheerful optimism for the coming season. This editorial is likewise inspiring optimism that Vogue’s stale and repetitive editorial formula is no longer. Vogue US has come under fire lately for being trite and uncreative, using the same models and photographers ad nauseam. Rumours have swirled about Anna Wintour’s dethroning (not true so far). Even the oft candid yet respected NY Times fashion critc Cathy Horyn penned an article about the publication’s state of decline.

Despite criticism, Vogue every so often manages to produce a relatively fresh editorial, as with this one. It’s shot by regular Vogue lenser Meisel, but he injects some newness by including his latest favourites — Anna Jagodzinska, Viktoriya Sasonkina and Jourdan Dunn — in SS09 Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Burberry Prorsum and Marni, etc. The editorial has a little more diversity and mixes newer and veteran faces but does it indicate an editorial rejuvenation at Vogue? Only time will tell.
