Although Gap has been slowly sliding towards irrelevance, they sometimes have interesting collaborations that keep me somewhat interested. Previously, Gap worked with CFDA nominees like Band of Outsiders, Phillip Lim and Thakoon to put a spin on the classic white shirt and with shoe guru Pierre Hardy on a capsule line.
Now Patrick Robinson, Gap’s executive VP of design, breaks news that their next collaboration is with 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Alexander Wang and he’s taking on khaki, not white shirts. Definitely not something I associate with Wang’s trendy grunge style but Robinson promises an “incredible motorcycle jacket that’s going to be under $100,” among other items. I think Gap is banking on co-opting some of Wang’s’s downtown cred to revitalize their brand seeing as Wang’s demographic skews towards the Zoë Kravitzes and Mary-Kates of the world. But it seem like there’s still a long way for Gap to go, however I’ll be there on June 16th when this hits stores!
