surf & sand

In three weeks I’m going on my first vacation this year to the Mayan Riviera. So bye-bye work and erratic Vancouver weather! While I won’t be wearing ruffled Valentino on the beach like Constance here, I’m really excited for summer clothes (I’m normally a fall kinda gal), sunglasses and getting tanned! What’s your outfit of choice to wear beach/poolside?

the trials and tribulations of lara stone

Vogue UK December 2009: Stone Age
Lara Stone / Photographer: Mario Testino

Lara Stone, notoriously tough and unapproachable, comes off very soft in this cover and ed for Vogue UK‘s December issue. Call it an image rehab (in more ways than one), but we have been seeing the Dutch model interpreted in a gentler light rather than a smoking sexpot. Recall her embodiment of Gloria Vanderbilt in September’s Vogue Paris.

Inside the mag hails her as a game-changer a la Kate Moss and Lara’s got a revealing and super-candid interview about spending four months in rehab this year for alcoholism, her famous boobs, figure and attitude. Oh and pushing another model down “a few stairs.”Read the context of that and other surprising reveals here.

cover shots / september 09

September’s always an epic month for magazines being the most advertising-heavy and usually having the most impressive covers, models and eds. Being a magazine fiend, I definitely had to restrain myself from going overboard this month and think I did rather well! *pats self on back*

Here’s my rundown of the good, bad and somewhat ugly September magazines (this is in no way exhaustive of course)!

The Good

Want, need this magazine in my life! Now where can I find it in Vancouver?

An all-Natasha issue of Muse is gold in my books!

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman gets the treatment for Interview and still looks pretty damn flawless.

Natalia V

Natalia V looks absolutely pristine and pastoral on the UK's version of Bazaar.

Like this cover miles better than her Vogue Paris one!

Like this cover miles better than Lara's Vogue Paris one!

The Mediocre

Charlize

Vogue's September cover hits the safe middle ground as usual, no surprises or edgy cover model in Charlize!

Kate looks just alright

Kate looks just alright on Vogue UK, a little tired unfortunately!

Lara Stone

Can't say I'm a fan of the demure brunette Lara.

Alex Hartley

Really wanted the premiere issue of Love, but not all that stoked about this "youth" issue with 2 different covers, this one's with Alex Hartley and...

Coco Sumner

the other one has an up-the-nose shot of Sting's offspring Coco Sumner.

Even though Leighton Meester is shot by Terry Richardson, it looks like Bazaar just took a red carpet photo and fixed the background and we all know what happened the last time they did that... What the heck is going on at Bazaar?

Alana Zimmer

This cover featuring Alana Zimmer somehow looks unfinished...

The Bad

Somehow Ashs sneering face next to Sasha just isnt doing it for me!

Somehow Ash's sneering face next to Sasha just isn't doing it for me!

Lady Gaga gone day-glo or what shed look like is she retired to South Beach right now

Lady Gaga gone day-glo or what she'd look like is she retired to South Beach right now, too much neon for my sensibilities!

i cannot work with bitches, i can’t, i can’t

I already adore Alber Elbaz for his flattering, drool worthy designs and penguin suits, but I also admire him for his self-deprecating and sensitive personality. This is kind of old news but I finally flipped through August’s British Vogue and read the Alexandra Shulman piece on the much-loved Lanvin designer, and this quote struck a chord with me because it’s so fitting of my life right now!

“The people I chose to run my new store in London are nice. I cannot work with bitches, I can’t, I can’t. Maybe I am too sensitive, I get blocked. There are some people who don’t give a damn. With me, I find that if there is no energy flowing or no connection, I can’t think. Talent is amazing – I love it, appreciate it. I respect talent a lot. But if you ask me, ‘Talent and bitch, or less talent and good?’ I’ll go with less talent.”

Big fat WORD Alber!! Less bitches please!

A snap from Lanvin’s opulent F/W 2009 show…

cover shots – july/august.09

A monster post of July and August covers…

The Good

Julia Stegner and Vogue Deutsch are a match made in heaven for their July issue... only wish the masthead was a contrasting colour to pop more!

Edita

Edita looks flawless as usual on Vogue Deutsch's August cover, even swallowed up in red and black.

This Daria cover is unbelievably simple yet so reminiscent of 80s photography that I like it.

Snejana

Snejana Onopka comes out of hiding for Vogue Russia's July cover

Anna Selezneva

Julia Hafstrom in 3D! Cool!

Julia Hafstrom in 3D! Cool concept and makeup.

Kristen

Model classic Kristen McMenamy for VI July, shot by who else but Meisel.

The Mediocre

Sashas trademark stare

Can see why Sasha's been scoring cosmetic contracts on Vogue UK's August cover but it's a little safe and lacks the usual Sasha edge!

Mad Mens January Jones

Mad Men's January Jones... totally distracted by the overbearing masthead.

It pains me to see the naturally gorgeous Christy Photoshopped/Botoxed so badly

It pains me to see the naturally gorgeous Christy Photoshopped/Botoxed so badly and with a kinda awkward leg pose.

Cameron Diaz looking decidedly un-Cameron Diaz. Good.

Sigrid is the cover model for Vogue Chinas August issue, I think her pose and expression could be stronger but its pretty solid anyway

Kates a hot mess on the cover

Kate's a hot mess on the Vogue Nippon's July issue

Julianne

Julianne Moore's autumn looks don't exactly work for a July cover but it's nice nonetheless (damn, I wonder how depressing it is to always be tapped for "age" issues).

This covers just ok but a touch awkward? And I still cant understand Anna Wintours obsession with Sienna Miller...

Numeros August issue crops up on Catherine McNeil, the angles kind of cool but the shot doesnt bowl me over.

The Bad

Surprisingly nothing too offensive this time around, Miley Cyrus’ Elle cover for August jumps to mind immediately but my blog’s a Miley-free zone. A girl’s gotta have some standards.

model moves

If you ever wondered what a model does in front of a camera lens beyond the newbies on ANTM, check out the videos below of Natasa Vojnovic and Anja Rubik. Both display a distinctly different style with Natasa going absolutely apeshit in a Terry Richardson-shot spread for Purple Magazine #11 and Anja artistically moving for a Nick Knight edit in Vogue UK‘s March 2009 issue.

the mediocre – not heinous but nothing to write home about

I will never get the Blake Lively hype or Vogues endorsement of her.
