vogue doubles up

A flurry of speculation has circulated around the fate of Men’s Vogue after it shrunk its publication from 10 issues a year to two due to a flagging economy. Monthly subscribers got notices that they could either cancel their subscription or change to Details or Portfolio instead. Now news comes out that the next issue of Men’s Vogue will be printed as a reverse-bound issue to April’s women’s Vogue, so expect to see Drew, Gwyneth or Kate on the one side and Barack, Hugh or Tiger on the other. The move should bolster ad sales for the main Vogue, which hasn’t been impressive of late, and improve circulation rates for Men’s Vogue.

old school

DSquared Spring/Summer 2009
Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista/Photographer: Steven Meisel

The DSquared Spring/Summer ads might as well be an editorial from the early 90s with the epic combination of Naomi, Linda and Meisel. The ad continues the current trend of bringing back supermodels from the early 90s (Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer and Stephanie Seymour included).  Even though DSquared’s designs don’t inspire the same artistic awe as Chanel and Prada, this ad’s the most striking of the season so far. I’m sure a lot of credit can go to Steven Meisel, a major force at Vogue Italia and the maker/breaker of models’ careers. It’s simplistic yet there is subtext abound and with heightened talk about needing more diversity in fashion, there’s even racial undertones (possibly owing to Meisel? After all, Vogue Italia’s July 2008 issue made headlines for casting all black models).

all about coco

Rocha that is — check out her blog, Oh So Coco!

You’ve likely seen Coco before if you ever flipped through a fashion magazine sometime in the past three years or watched a Canadian entertainment show recently. She’s the biggest model to come out of Canada since Daria Werbowy and is gaining mainstream recognition. She’s about as super as models get nowadays, her catchy name certainly helps.

Her ad for H&M SS09

Coco facts:

  • The 20-year-old is from Vancouver – Richmond actually
  • Coco’s in high profile spots for YSL’s Elle perfume, Gap and H&M this season
  • She’s a favourite of designers Jean-Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld and photographer Steven Meisel
  • She recently dyed her trademark brunette tresses red, a change so momentous it even warranted a hair colour article in January’s Vogue (in which she appears consistently)
  • Coco's new red hair

  • She has a trademark “Magnum” look, consisting of a slightly agape mouth, narrowed eyes to create a pissed/high fashion expression
  • The Coco look

  • She’s a skilled Irish dancer – she opened the Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2007 fashion show by dancing down the runway (vid below)

Coco Quote:
“They said, ‘You need to lose more weight — the look this year is anorexia, and although we don’t want you to be anorexic, we want you to look it. My question is, how do you look anorexic unless you actually are?” — Coco at the CFDA-hosted “Beauty of Health” discussion in 2008, hardly refuting the bastardly side of fashion
